n this post, I’ll guide you through the process to Change the Owner in Project Online or Project Server. The process involves two sets of steps—one set for the current project owner and the other set for the new owner. Let’s get started!

Change the Owner in Project Online

Steps for the Current Project Owner

If you’re the original owner of the project (or the application administrator for Project Online or Project Server) and want to transfer ownership to someone else, follow these steps:

  1. Launch your preferred web browser and navigate to the Project Center page in PWA.
  2. In the Project Center data grid, locate the project you want to transfer to a new owner.
  3. Click the project name to open it in a detailed Project view.
  4. In the detailed Project view, click either the “Project Details” link or the “Project Information” link in the Quick Launch menu.
  5. Click the “Project” tab to display the Project ribbon.
  6. In the Project ribbon, click the “Edit” button to check out the project for editing.
  7. In the detailed Project view, scroll down to the Owner field.
  8. Click the “Browse” button at the right end of the Owner field.
  9. In the Pick Resource dialog, select the name of the new project owner and click the “OK” button. You should now see the new owner’s name in the Owner field.
  10. In the Project ribbon, click the “Save” button.
  11. After the Save job has completed successfully, click the “Close” button in the Project ribbon to close the project.
  12. In the Close dialog, make sure the “Check it in” option is selected, and then click the “OK” button.

You’ll be returned to the Project Center page in PWA.

Steps for the New Project Owner

Once the ownership has been transferred for the project, the new owner will need to complete a few additional steps:

  1. Launch Microsoft Project and connect to either Project Online or Project Server.
  2. Open and check out the enterprise project for which you are the new owner.
  3. Display the Gantt Chart view, if necessary.
  4. Right-click on the Duration column header and select the “Insert Column” item on the shortcut menu.
  5. From the list of available fields, select the Status Manager field, and then widen the column if necessary. You’ll notice that the previous owner is listed as the Status Manager for each task.
  6. Click the pick list button in the “Status Manager” column for the first task and select your name from the list.
  7. Leave your name selected in the first task’s Status Manager field.
  8. Press and hold the Shift and Control keys on your computer keyboard, then press the Down-Arrow key to select all the tasks in the Status Manager column.
  9. Press Control + D to copy your name into every cell in the Status Manager column.
  10. Right-click the Status Manager column header again and select the “Hide Column” item on the shortcut menu.
  11. Save and Publish your changes.
